We have all known it for a long time, fossil fuels are finite and will run out. Before they run out however, they will become scarce to the extent that using them becomes expensive and prohibitive. This has prompted interest in renewable, indeed abundant, energy resources like solar energy.

Many people are a bit hesitant to install a solar power system because of the cost or they do not understand the technology. However, with the right information, it is actually quite easy to install a solar system. Moreover, there are a variety of solar power systems. some are easy to install and some are more complicated. Starting with the simple ones primes you for the more complicated systems.

This article will cover the many solar power options open to the homeowner that wants to save on energy bills.

Solar Oven : A solar oven is actually very easy to build. In fact, it is a favorite as a school project. Essentially it involves creating a box the size of a microwave oven that is optimized to attract the thermal rays from the sun. In the ideal conditions you can create some elaborate meals using such a system.

The only limitation with the solar cooker is the time it takes to cook and a warm climate. However, given the free source of energy it uses, this is a great option for cutting down those sky-rocketing bills and saving some power.

Solar home lighting: A solar home lighting system converts solar energy into electrical energy for your home. This is done with photovoltaic cells that are convert photons to electrical energy. So, in the night, if you wonder how the lights are on in the house, it is because of the solar energy stored in the solar cells. You can install the solar home lighting system in your house and not worry about the electricity bills anymore.

Solar heating : solar heating can be to keep the house warm or it can be used to heat the water that you use for baths, showers or washing up. solar heating can use an active solar powered system (solar panels) or a passive system that relies on the Suns heat to warm up water. Both systems can save you money on water bills that are often one of the most expensive bills you will get.

Companies providing solar power systems for residential homes make it a point to install aesthetically-pleasing heating systems in your house. As far as expenditure is concerned, investing in a solar heating system can make sense because you get a return on your investment within 3-4 years, giving you absolutely free service after that. You can also get grants and rebates on certain solar systems.

Moving can be such a daunting task, especially when you have a lot of belongings. You pack them up, the movers come get them, the movers move those items to your new home, and then you have to unpack the very things you had just packed. If there was only a better way, right? Well, until the technology for “packing robots” is developed, this is the only way in which packing is going to be done. But how about those things that the movers won’t move? What do you do with those things? Most of all, what items will they not move? These are great questions because some individuals are not prepared for the answers.

What they won’t move

Residential movers are pretty good about moving your belongings to your new home. However, there are some things you need to know before you start scrambling for the boxes and tape. Those things are what they won’t move. Those things are:

- Pets - If you have pets, you need to make arrangements to move them. Hopefully you’re not taping them up in boxes for the movers to move them. However, it is a federal regulation that prohibits them from being able to transport animals in their vans. That is why you must place your pet in a cage or carrier in your car and move your pet yourself.

- Plants - Not moving live plants is another thing that is federally regulated. There is an exception, though. That exception is if your destination is within 150 miles. If so, they can move them. Then again, you have to check with the movers and their individual policies.

- Flammable items - Moving companies cannot move anything flammable or combustible. That means you have to ensure that oil and gasoline are removed from lawn mowers, weed eaters, and other power equipment. They also cannot transport any type of fuel such as propane tanks, tiki torch oil, or gas cans.

- Hazardous chemicals - If you have pesticides or other items that can be considered hazardous, they are not able to move that either. Fertilizers and the such must not be placed within a moving van. This includes anything that is toxic. You must find another way to transport these items.

Not transporting these items are both for the safety of the moving company and to protect your belongings when their inside of the moving van. It is quite understandable why you do not want flammable items in the van with your clothing and your furniture. It is also understandable why you do not want your pet in the back of the van either. The environment is unsafe for your furry friend.

Things to note

Also make a note that transporting personal items should be done by you. This is in reference to essentials such as a change of clothes, medications, and toiletries if you are moving long distance or moving international. You also want to keep your valuables such as jewelry and family heirlooms with you. That way you know that they are safe by being able to keep track of them at all times.

You also need to read the small print in the agreement that is given to you by the moving company. Make sure you read everything that is given to you so that you know the restrictions and can accommodate those restrictions before moving day. That way you are prepared and you’re not running around looking for a solution that is probably packed away in an unknown box in the back of the moving truck.

Whether you’re travelling internationally or domestically, travel insurance is an important but often overlooked part of your vacation, a quick and simple way of being covered for unforeseen costs.

Things like sickness, losing your baggage and belongings, a flight being cancelled or delayed, an overseas court can really spoil your travels. Travel insurance is designed to protect you from such things (if not completely, then as much as possible). Obviously travel insurance cannot guard you from, for example, in extreme situations, death. Travel insurance is provided for both individual persons and groups of persons and is one of the most variable kinds of insurance available in terms of price and cover.

Travel insurance is provided for both individual persons and groups of persons and is one of the most variable kinds of insurance available in terms of price and cover.

In serious cases travel insurance will cover issues such as ‘repatriation’ which involves flying a patient back to their home country for medical care. In case of death, medical travel insurance will arrange for a victim’s body to be returned to its homeland and family. These examples are dire but without travel insurance to cover you, you could end up spending yourself (and possibly your extended family too) hundreds of thousands of dollars.

When purchasing travel insurance, it is important voice any doubts or misunderstandings to avoid disappointment in case a claim needs to be made. Travellers need not be misinformed about their travel insurance as every policy should be supplemented with policy wording to outline and detail exactly what the travel insurance purchased will and will not cover. This policy wording will back up any claim you make, so long as your case is valid and deserving of cover. Do not allow the thought of buying travel insurance to daunt you. One often hears of or reads about cases where travellers have been ‘cheated’ out of money that they believe is rightfully owed to them for a claim they have made but your travel insurance can be completely in your control. Some travellers lose their travel insurance claims due to small and unfortunately overlooked factors. For example, travel insurance can not be claimed on if a police report is not obtained by the traveller at the scene of the crime to back up a case of theft. Without a police report, there is no proof of theft.

If travelling away on holiday, do yourself a favour and familiarise yourself with the prospect of travel insurance. One step at a time means you can avoid wasting money and being informed means you can avoid losing money.

The best gas mileage cars aren’t just the usual suspects. Toyota’s hybrid Prius might be the first thing that pops into your mind, but the others may not come to mind as easily.

With the price of oil remaining unstable, gas prices will continue to be unstable. This probably means the cost of gas will continue to rise rather than stabilize or even drop.

The best gas mileage cars are also the newest cars, which means most of us don’t have them, and most of us aren’t in a position to buy a new car right now. Besides, that would defeat the purpose of paying less money for gas.

For $21,100 the Toyota Prius gives us a Combined EPA Mileage of 42 mpg. Other top performers include the Mini Cooper, the Honda Civic, and the Toyota Corolla. Surprisingly though, the Toyota Altima is on the list as well.

Along with the Toyota Prius, many of the top gas mileage cars are what you might expect, however not all of them are obvious.

Few people are predicting that oil will stabilize anytime soon. That means that the price of gas probably won’t stabilize anytime soon either. The one benefit, if it can be called a benefit, is that people are a lot more cognizant of their energy and gas consumption.

While oil and gas prices rise, there are some things we can do to take some of the sting out of it. Driving the best gas mileage car if it’s possible is certainly one. But there are other things we can do regardless of what we drive, such as keeping our tires inflated and engines properly tuned.

I don’t usually like change. Alright…I hate it. Change is bad is a mantra that I can’t keep from repeating over and over in my head. So it’s no wonder that I never embrace new products immediately. I typically can’t imagine why I would need it. I never have before, right?

That may make sense to you, but more than likely it seems crazy and illogical. And that’s alright. I’m aware of the implications! When it comes to something exciting and really, really new (as in not been done before) in the car industry…designers would probably like to think it happens all the time. But I’d have to disagree. The car industry definitely offers new vehicles every year, but for the most part, the evolution in design and function is quite slow (probably because most of us are nervous with huge change).

But sometimes evolution jumps ahead and the car designers throw something out that is so different from the other offerings that it’s shocking! My initial reaction to these “shockers” is to dislike them instantly. (Again…the issues with change in general). Sometimes my instant dislike is followed eventually by a general, acceptable dislike based upon actual qualities of the vehicle. But sometimes I’m wrong. Can you believe that?

At least I can admit when I’m wrong, I guess. Two such vehicles are the Ridgeline and the Element. Both are Honda vehicles and both brought on my ridiculous knee jerk reaction of instant dislike when they were offered up to the public.

The Ridgeline just seemed too much of a car to be called a truck. I know, I know. That’s quite silly considering that was the point. And I understand at this late date and recognize the Ridgeline in all its brilliance. You can have the truck bed for moving furniture, etc. and the cab that feels like a car. Unless you’re looking for a commercial vehicle the Ridgeline has most of the “truck” features you’re going to want to use randomly combined with a comfort that we all want in our everyday vehicles.

The Element was a stand out design. And I mean that literally. It stood out on the road. Other vehicle designs were embracing the curvy, and the fluid and the Element popped out looking definitely boxy. But it broke up the dominant look and made a space for itself. It still stands out on the road.

Both Honda vehicles, the Ridgeline and the Element, are great examples of the car industry coming up with something vital and new! And it’s obvious (at this late date) that my initial reactions were wrong. Drivers love both of the designs. You can’t deny it when you see them on the road, on the highway, in parking lots, in drive thru’s and in drive ways. And that’s where the Ridgeline and the Element find themselves…everywhere!

Travel insurance is designed to cover you when things go wrong and problems arise during your travels. Travel insurance is not so much an optional extra as an integral part of any break. Travel Insurance is just as essential as your sunglasses, toiletries and camera when you’re heading off on holiday. Travel insurance is a way to offer yourself peace of mind and minimise the considerable financial risks of travelling. Travel insurance is insurance that is intended to cover your medical expenses, financial losses (such as money invested in non-refundable pre-payments), and other losses incurred while travelling, either within your own country, or in other countries. Travel insurance is priced as a percentage of trip costs, and typically ranges from 4 to 8%.

Travel insurance for a couple will be cheaper than for two single adults, and cover for a family with children under 18 is not usually much more expensive than cover for a couple. Your insurance provider will adjust your travel insurance policy in compliance with your requests and potential risks you might face during your trip. Insurance brokers have contacts with a wide range of travel insurance companies and might be able to assist you in finding the right travel insurance. Insurance policies and their provisions usually become active as of the moment of payment which means that you can buy your policy online at the last minute, for instance, at the airport before you board your flight.

Some things you may not know about travel insurance include the fact that an insurance air travel policy covers you if your plane is involved in an accident, no matter what financial state the airline is in. There are also regular travel insurance companies out there that will insure you for adrenaline sports such as skiing and bungee jumping at rates that are very affordable.

Bearing in mind that most sections of your policy have limits on the amount the insurer will pay under that section, you can use travel insurance as the ultimate tool to prepare for the unexpected on a trip abroad.

There’s no legal requirement for you to have insurance when you travel abroad but if you find yourself in a situation like that you’ll bless the day you took a policy out because travelling with no insurance puts you at serious risk which you might not be able to handle. The good news is, though, that travel insurance is getting cheaper. Perhaps travel insurance is indeed a wise decision.
